Zongmi's "One Bright Pearl"

A monk asked Zongmi, " What is the one bright pearl?" Zongmi called to his attendant, "Fetch the scripture box." The attendant brought it. Zongmi said, "Return it to its place." After the attendant had done so, he asked again, "What is the one bright pearl?" Zongmi said, "I have exhausted my spiritual power for your sake."

Reflection

Zongmi's 'One Bright Pearl' uses a simple exchange with an attendant to demonstrate that ultimate reality is not found in objects or explanations but in seamless, ordinary activity. Fetching and returning the scripture box is itself the pearl. When the monk asks again, Zongmi says he has exhausted his spiritual power – meaning the teaching cannot be repeated or packaged.
