Zhaozhou's "Mu"

A monk asked Zhaozhou, " Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?" Zhaozhou said, "Mu."

Reflection

Zhaozhou's single syllable 'Mu' (meaning 'no' or 'without') is the most famous koan in Zen history. It is not a denial of Buddha-nature but a sword that cuts off all intellectual speculation. The student is instructed to concentrate on 'Mu' with total absorption until the distinction between subject and object dissolves.
