Reflection

Yantou's final shout as bandits kill him is the ultimate expression of non-dual freedom. Death does not interrupt his teaching – it becomes his final teaching. The shout echoing through the mountains symbolizes that the awakened mind cannot be silenced by any circumstance. The koan confronts our deepest fear: can we meet death with the same presence as life? Yantou answers with a cry of freedom.
