Voice of Happiness
A monk asked Master Dongshan, "
What is the voice of happiness?" Dongshan replied,
"I am not deaf." The monk asked again, "What is the voice of suffering?" Dongshan said,
"I am not mute."
Reflection
Dongshan's replies to questions about happiness and suffering are immediate and personal: 'I am not deaf' and 'I am not mute.' He refuses to offer abstract descriptions, instead pointing to the living experience of his own mind. The koan shows that joy and sorrow are not objective states to be defined but are realised in the direct, undivided awareness of the moment.
