Ummon's Goose
A monk asked Master Ummon, "
What about when a wild goose is separated from the flock?" Ummon said,
"It goes into the ancient pond." The monk bowed.
Ummon then grabbed him and shouted,
"You dead ghost! It's gone in now what?" The monk was speechless.
Ummon pushed him away.
Reflection
Ummon's goose koan uses the image of a wild goose entering an ancient pond to probe the nature of enlightenment. When the monk conceptualizes this as a special event ('It's gone in now – what?'), Ummon grabs him, showing that awakening is not a separate moment to be grasped. The 'dead ghost' rebuke indicates that conceptualizing enlightenment kills its living quality. Realization is not a destination but the nature of this very moment.
