Three Pounds of Flax

A monk asked Dongshan, " What is Buddha?" Dongshan replied, "Three pounds of flax."

Reflection

Dongshan's 'Three pounds of flax' is one of the most famous blunt answers in Zen. When asked 'What is Buddha?' the master answers with a common household item. The response is not symbolic; it is a direct presentation of Buddha-nature as the ordinary, material world. The three pounds of flax are the Buddha – no more, no less.
